If you want to hear what Roy's Own picks sound like, check out the attached sound clip of Little Liza Jane. Once you've tried Roy's Own picks, you won't need to look any further.ĭ/ ![]() These picks would be a bargain at five times the price!Īt $10 bucks a pair (the price of two Grand Lattie-Dah coffees from Starbucks), just try them out. When I called Doug Hutchens (the former Bluegrass Boy who makes them) to order some spares, he explained how he chose the exact same alloy used to make the old Nationals.ĭoug and his family make the Roy's Own picks in small batches by hand, with a manual punch press, etc.ĭoug is a banjo player himself, and Little Roy Lewis (the "Roy" in Roy's Own) ain't no slouch either! The first time I wore the Roy's Own picks to a band rehearsal, ALL of the other members of the band said, "What did you do to your banjo? It sounds twice as loud!"Įven when I played very lightly, those Roy's Own picks kept putting out tone and volume-I had to turn sideways so the vocalists could hear themselves! I have a Gibson with great tone and plenty of volume, so I've never been told that I play too softly. I believe in playing bluegrass banjo like you mean it-loud and relentless-when the song needs it. Ten bucks for a pair of Roy's Own will get you picks that use the exact same alloy as in the old pre-war Nationals used by Earl, Don Reno, Ralph Stanley, Allen Shelton, Little Roy Lewis, etc. I've already spent the hundred bucks for you. You will have to waste at least a hundred bucks or so to find the finger picks that are right for you!! I've tried many different brands of picks, but these are my hands-down (no pun intended) favorites. used on all those classic bluegrass recordings-which is the sound that I love. ![]() The old Nationals were what Scruggs, Reno, Stanley, etc. ![]() " Different metals offer different amounts of friction to the strings."īecause the alloy used in the original Nationals was the softest of the seven “German silver” alloys available, the "Roy's Own" picks (using the same alloy) “grab” the string more, increasing the volume and maximizing the tone. They're made for Little Roy Lewis by Doug Hutchens (one of Monroe's Blue Grass Boys), and are available from Janet Davis Music for only about $10 a pair. I love the tone and volume I get from "Roy's Own" picks. I prefer "Roy's Own" picks because they are the exact same alloy as was used in the pre-war Nationals and they sound fabulous.
